ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch) was developed in 1994 with the initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The exams are oriented around catalogues developed especially for the ÖSD of vocabulary, themes, structures and level descriptions of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” (CEFR) and “Profile deutsch”. Today the ÖSD offers nine different exams on six levels. World-wide, over 40,000 candidates annually pass an ÖSD examination at one of the approximately 200 licensed Institutes.
